After dropping its first match of the 2022 season Saturday against a juggernaut Arcata Tigers squad at Arcata High School, the Del Norte girls’ tennis team returned to action Tuesday, this time at the friendly confines of Del Norte High School.
Although the Warriors dropped a 6-3 outcome to North Coast Preparatory Academy, the home team did capture the two doubles matches that were played on the day. The tandem of Adenne Schaad and Riley Ortega won their match in the No. 1 position on the ladder by an 8-4 margin in a pro-set format, while the Warriors No. 2 doubles team of Autumn Thompson and Noni Foust won their match by an identical 8-4 score.
In what was easily the most highly-contested match of the afternoon, Del Norte’s Kate Adams outlasted her opponent in the No. 5 singles match in a three-set marathon. Adams cruised to a 6-1 victory in the opening set before falling 3-6 in the second stanza, thus setting the stage for a decisive third. Adams ultimately eked out victory via a 7-5 tiebreaker to ultimately capture the match.
The visiting North Coast Preparatory Academy Heron won the remaining four singles matches played on the day, while the Warriors were forced to forfeit the No. 6 singles match and the No. 3 doubles match due to having only five players on their current roster. The Warriors are scheduled to return to action Saturday, when they will play host to the Fortuna Huskies at Del Norte High School. Matches get underway at 10 a.m.
